Different types of treatment are available for patients with prostate cancer. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment. The treatments for prostate cancer are not without their side effects. After the prostate is removed there is a high risk of impotence, and urinary incontinence may occur. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while improving all the time, can be very trying, painful and traumatic. Open communication, not only with your health practitioner but also with your family and friends, will help you to cope with any potential side effects of treatment. Remember that you are not alone. Joining support groups allows you to meet people who are sharing your experiences, and may give you a better understanding of how to manage your own recovery.
