Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan says he hopes a new prostate cancer research centre in Brisbane will develop ways to better detect and treat the disease.
The Government has committed $7.5 million to the centre at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Another centre in Victoria was funded in November as part of election promise.
Mr Swan is a prostate cancer survivor and says more research is needed into all forms of cancer.
"Cancer is something that doesn't discriminate, male or female, young or old," he said.
"When a family is hit with cancer it impacts on all of us. And prostate cancer is just one of many cancers that is taking many lives of many Australians."
